How to Build a Matching Workout Set You'll Wear on Repeat

There's something about a matching workout set that makes you stand a little taller walking into class. It looks polished, photographs well and takes zero thought to put on. You don't need to buy sets as sets, either. With a few simple color rules, you can build a small activewear wardrobe where almost everything matches. Here's how.

Tonal lilac set in a limestone colonnade: Veda Stretch Slim Fit Full-Zip Yoga Jacket in Purple + Color Block Yoga Sports Bra in Light Purple + Lycra High Waisted Yoga Leggings in Purple

Option 1: the true match

Same color top and bottom. It's foolproof, lengthening and always looks intentional. Pair a V-Neck Yoga Sports Bra, which comes in a wide range of colors, with Lycra High Waisted Yoga Leggings in the same shade. Black, khaki and soft neutrals are the easiest place to start.

Tip: the same color in slightly different fabrics can look a little different, so check both pieces in daylight.

Option 2: tonal dressing

Two shades of the same color family, such as a light gray top with charcoal leggings, or cream with khaki. It feels softer and more relaxed than a perfect match and is very forgiving.

Option 3: color block

Use a color-block piece as your anchor, then pull one of its colors into the other half of the outfit.

Option 4: neutral base, one pop of color

Black or neutral bottoms with one bright top. It's the easiest way to add color without worrying about matching. Try a bright Strappy Criss Cross Yoga Sports Bra with black leggings.

Balance your shapes

Matching isn't only about color. Think about proportions too:

The one-piece shortcut

Want a matched look with zero effort? A one-piece does it for you. Try the Quarter-Zip Yoga Romper, the U-Neck Yoga Romper or the Tight Long Sleeve Yoga Bodysuit.

Build a capsule activewear wardrobe (8 pieces, 15+ outfits)

  1. Black high-waisted leggings
  2. Neutral flared yoga pants
  3. Biker shorts
  4. Black sports bra
  5. Sports bra in your favorite color
  6. Fitted crewneck tank
  7. Color-block tank or bra (your statement piece)
  8. Zip jacket in a neutral

Keep everything within one neutral and one or two accent colors, and every top will work with every bottom. For more outfit inspiration, see our athleisure outfit ideas.
