How to Choose Yoga Leggings: The Complete Guide to Fabric, Rise and Fit

The right pair of yoga leggings disappears while you move. You don't tug the waistband up in downward dog, the fabric doesn't turn see-through in a forward fold, and you forget you are wearing them until you catch your reflection. The wrong pair does the opposite. This guide walks you through everything to check before you buy yoga leggings: the fabric blend, the fabric weight, the rise, the length and the fit.

1. Start with the fabric blend

Look at the care label or product description first. Almost every good pair of yoga leggings is a blend of a base fiber and a stretch fiber:

  • Nylon (also called polyamide) feels smooth, soft and slightly cool against the skin. It is the fiber behind the "buttery" feel people love.
  • Polyester is a little crisper and very colorfast, which makes it popular for bold prints and color blocking.
  • Spandex (also called elastane or Lycra) is what gives leggings their stretch and recovery, the ability to snap back into shape instead of bagging at the knees.

For yoga, a blend with around 20–25% spandex gives you a close, supportive fit that still moves through deep stretches. Our Lycra High Waisted Yoga Leggings, for example, are 80% nylon and 20% spandex. If you want the full breakdown of nylon versus polyester, read our guide to nylon vs polyester activewear.

2. Check the fabric weight (GSM)

Fabric weight is measured in grams per square meter (GSM). It is one of the most useful numbers you can look at, because it tells you how the leggings will feel before you try them on:

  • Under 200 GSM: very light and airy. Good for heat, but can feel less supportive.
  • 200–250 GSM: the sweet spot for most yoga and pilates. Soft, breathable and still substantial enough to feel held in.
  • 250 GSM and up: dense and compressive. Great for structure and colder days.

Most of our leggings sit in the 215–230 GSM range, which is why they feel light without feeling flimsy.

3. Choose your rise: why high-waisted wins for yoga

The rise is where the waistband sits on your body. For yoga, a high-waisted or high-rise band is the most popular choice for three reasons:

  1. It stays in place when you fold forward, twist or go upside down.
  2. It smooths and supports your midsection without digging in.
  3. It pairs neatly with cropped tops and sports bras, so there's no gap when you raise your arms.

Look for a wide, flat elastic waistband. It spreads pressure evenly, so it won't roll down or leave marks. Our High Waisted Yoga Leggings and everyday High Waisted Yoga Leggings are both built around this kind of band.

4. Pick the right length

  • Full length / ankle length: the classic. Ideal for cooler studios and a clean, streamlined line.
  • Capri or 7/8 length: hits mid-calf or just above the ankle. Great if you are petite, if you run warm, or if you like to show off your shoes. Try our High Waisted Yoga Capri Leggings.
  • Flared: fitted through the hip and thigh, then opening out below the knee. They have made a big comeback. See how to style them in our guide to flared yoga pants.
  • Shorts: for hot yoga or summer. Compare the options in biker shorts vs yoga shorts.

5. Get the fit right

Yoga leggings should feel like a gentle hug: snug everywhere, tight nowhere. Here is a quick fit test to do at home:

  • The squat test: in good light, squat down in front of a mirror. The fabric should stay opaque across the seat.
  • The waistband test: bend forward and touch your toes. The band should stay put without you holding it.
  • The ankle test: full-length leggings should end at the ankle bone without bunching.
  • The breathing test: sit cross-legged and take a deep breath. You should feel supported, not squeezed.

If you are between sizes, think about how you like to feel. Size down for more compression and hold. Size up for a softer, more relaxed fit. Always check the size chart on each product page, since some of our styles use numeric sizes (4–12) and others use S–XL.

6. Think about style, not just function

Leggings are no longer only for the studio. A color-block pair such as our Color Block Yoga Leggings works with an oversized sweatshirt for errands. Our Skirted Flare Yoga Leggings bring a softer, more feminine shape. Choose one neutral pair you can wear with everything, then add a statement pair once your basics are covered.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best material for yoga leggings?

A nylon and spandex blend (roughly 75–80% nylon, 20–25% spandex) is the most popular choice. It feels soft, stretches in every direction and recovers its shape well.

Should yoga leggings be tight?

They should be snug enough to stay in place and move with you, but never so tight that they dig in, restrict your breathing or leave deep marks.

How do I stop my leggings from being see-through?

Choose a medium fabric weight (around 200–250 GSM), make sure you're wearing the right size (sizing down too far stretches the knit thin), and do the squat test in good light.

How often should I replace yoga leggings?

With good care, a quality pair can last for years. Our guide on how to wash leggings shows you how to keep them stretchy and bright.
