The Best Sports Bra for Yoga: How to Find Your Perfect Fit and Style

A good sports bra for yoga has a different job from a running bra. You need enough hold to feel secure through inversions and flows, and enough freedom to breathe deeply and twist without straps digging in. This guide covers how much support you actually need, which necklines work best on the mat, and a simple fit test you can do at home.

How much support do you need for yoga?

Sports bras are usually described as low, medium or high support:

  • Low support: ideal for yoga, stretching, barre and pilates, where there is little bouncing. It feels light and comfortable enough to wear all day.
  • Medium support: a good all-rounder for power yoga, vinyasa, cycling and gym sessions, or if you want a little more hold.
  • High support: built for running, HIIT and jumping. It is usually more than you need for yoga.

Most yoga practices are well served by a light-to-medium support bra in a soft, stretchy fabric. The fit matters more than the support label, so read the fit test below before you buy.

Choose a neckline that suits your practice

Halter sports bras

A halter neck wraps around the back of the neck and frees the shoulders. Nothing slips off when you reach overhead, and it looks great under an open jacket. Try our Halter Yoga Sports Bra or the Halter Color Block Yoga Sports Bra.

V-neck sports bras

A V-neck elongates the torso and gives a slightly more open, flattering neckline. Our V-Neck Yoga Sports Bra comes in a wide range of colors, so it's easy to match to your leggings.

U-neck and scoop-neck sports bras

A higher, rounder neckline gives more coverage for inversions and forward folds. See our U-Neck Yoga Sports Bra.

Strappy and criss-cross sports bras

Multiple thin straps spread the load across the back and add a detail that looks beautiful from behind, which is ideal for the studio. Try the Strappy Criss Cross Yoga Sports Bra or the Spaghetti Strap Yoga Sports Bra.

Cropped zip and longline styles

Longer, cropped styles sit between a bra and a tank top. They give more coverage and work well as outerwear. Our Cropped Zip Yoga Sports Bra is a good example.

The 5-point sports bra fit test

  1. Band: the band does most of the supporting. It should sit level around your ribcage and feel snug. You should be able to slide two fingers underneath, but no more.
  2. Straps: they should sit flat without digging into your shoulders. If they dig in, the band is probably too loose.
  3. Coverage: no spilling over the top or sides when you raise your arms.
  4. Movement: do a few sun salutations. The bra should stay in place, and the band shouldn't ride up.
  5. Breathing: take a deep belly breath. You should feel held, not restricted.

Sizing varies between styles. Some of our bras use numeric sizes (4–12) and others S–XL, so check the size chart on each product page.

Fabric: what to look for

Look for a blend of nylon or polyester with a generous amount of spandex, typically 13–25%. Spandex gives the bra its hug and recovery, so it keeps its shape wash after wash. A smooth, soft knit also means no chafing through long holds. Learn more in our guide to activewear fabrics.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a sports bra for yoga?

You don't strictly need one, but a sports bra keeps you comfortable and secure in inversions and forward folds, and it stays in place much better than an everyday bra.

Is a halter or racerback better for yoga?

Both work well. Halters free up the shoulders and look great under jackets. Racerback and criss-cross styles spread support across the upper back. Choose whichever feels better when you raise your arms.

How tight should a yoga sports bra be?

Snug around the band, with room for two fingers underneath, and comfortable enough to take a full, deep breath.

How do I wash a sports bra?

Wash it cool on a gentle cycle, skip the fabric softener and let it air dry. Our activewear care guide has the full routine.
